Happy Birthday, Bug!

Dear Bug,

Well first off, what do you mean, you're two?  When did this happen?  I did not authorize this, I'm pretty sure.

I kid, but not really.  I don't know how it's been two years since that fateful February morning that you came into the world, but I have to tell you--these have been two of the best years of my life.

Your second year of life has been pretty incredible.  You've learned so many new things this year.  You can walk (and run!).  You can put together puzzles.  You play with your friends (especially that little girlfriend of yours).  You have started to verbalize your thoughts.

And on top of it all, you are a wonderful big brother, and I'm so proud of you for that.  I know it's hard sharing Mommy and Daddy, but you have been so sweet to the one you refer to as "Cat", and it's such a blessing.  One of my favorite memories from this year is definitely thinking about when your dad brought you to visit me in the hospital, and the gigantic grin that spread across your face the first time you saw your baby brother.  It was like you knew that he was the one who you had been kissing every time you kissed Mommy's belly, and I love the way you spontaneously give him kisses when he's sitting in my lap, or in his bouncer.

We did so many fun things this year.  You loved the days that we made it to the park and you got to go on the swings.  You learned that slides were kind of cool, and that you didn't really need to cling to Mommy at the park.  I remember the first day you decided to explore on your own a bit.  You kept turning around to look at me and make sure that I was still there, but you definitely were going to go and do your own thing.  And you were so very proud of yourself for mastering this skill.

I love reading you books now, and I love the fact that you will point out things in them, and that when I ask you to identify pictures you can do so with ease.

I can't get over how big you are.  At one year, you were 26 pounds, 10 oz.  Now you weigh 33 1/2 pounds and are 39 1/4 inches tall.  That's just crazy to me, that the 7 pound 13 oz baby I birthed has grown so well and so much.  You are healthy and I thank God for that every day.  I do wish you hadn't decided you didn't like green beans anymore, but I guess I can't blame you.  I didn't like them until I was an adult myself.

You are really becoming your own person.  You tell me no, a lot.  You refuse food that you previously loved and you crack me up when you see me drinking a soda, because you immediately break into a smile and start saying, "Ahhh!"  In fact, I now refer to all drinks as "Ahhh!"

You really have no fear, which is something that totally terrifies me.

You're also sneaky.  I had to laugh the other day when you got into the Samoas, and when I called you on it, you immediately tried to shove a Samoa into my mouth.  At least I know I've taught you how to share.

It's been a great year, Bug.  I love you so much, my handsome boy.  I can't wait to see what you surprise me with this year--it should be a good time.
